Pixar are receiving backlash after cutting a transgender storyline from their new showOn Tuesday 17 December, a spokesperson for Disney confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter that Pixar’s new animated series Win or Lose, which follows a middle school softball team named the Pickles in the week leading up to their championship game, will no longer include a transgender storyline.
In a statement, the Disney spokesperson said: “When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognize that many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline.”
While the character remains in the show, the few lines of dialogue that reference their gender identity have been removed. Chanel Stewart, the 18 year old actress who voices the character, is a transgender woman. She told Deadline on Tuesday that she was “very disheartened” to learn that Pixar had axed the storyline but that her character is “still a part of the show heavily”.
She added: “From the moment I got the script, I was excited to share my journey to help empower other trans youth. I knew this would be a very important conversation. Trans stories matter, and they deserve to be heard”.
Win on Lose will be released on Disney+ from February 19 2025.
