This song is the third part of a series of live pieces which center around the relationship between beauty and pain. I recently read Stephen King's "On Writing: A Memoir on the Craft," a book I highly recommend to anyone enthusiastic about reading or writing. One idea from the book which appealed to me was King's notion that writing a good story should be more like unearthing a fossil than sculpting an artwork according to a preconceived template or design. This idea is not unique to King, but it is exemplified in his writing. According to this outlook, the writer must embark on a journey into his own subconscious and discover the ideas lurking therein. I think this concept can be generalized to encompass virtually all acts of creative expression, including the composition of music. In this way, the work of the artist, writer or painter should be a pure extension of the creative impulse. Thus the progression of the story, artwork or song is akin to that of log floating in a river current, drawn along by the ideas that 'spring forth' from that unconscious creative impulse which is the root of all artistic free expression. When writing and performing the songs in this series, I begin with only a vague idea of theme or melody. I turn my mind to memories, both of beauty and of pain, and I find that the music flow freely underneath my fingers.
