The Dorian mode gives you two for the price of one. Not only do you get to learn one of the most useful modes, but I’ll show you how to conquer it in the easiest way possible by mastering the simple but elusive POSITION SHIFT! In this lesson I show you where the Dorian mode comes from and how to think about it. Then I show you the pattern on bass and guitar, the problem it presents, and how to solve it.

♪ The Dorian mode is the 2nd mode of the major scale; it’s all the notes from a given major scale, but starting on the 2nd note and continuing up to the same note an octave higher.
♪ The Dorian mode can also be thought of as the minor scale with a raised 6. That’s a major 6 instead of the usual minor 6.
♪ Playing the Dorian mode in our stand minor pattern presents a problem!
♪ If we go into a closed position on scale degree 5 and then expand back the other way we can SHIFT our position on the neck without having to commit to a position change.
