Mayor, Motor City Match officials to help open Umi’s Comfort, Detroit’s only quilting store

WHAT: Ribbon Cutting of the 141st Motor City Match Business to open in the City of Detroit. Umi’s Comfort, located in the Nardin Park neighborhood, is the only quilting store in the city of Detroit, offering handmade custom quilts, pillows and quilting classes for community members. With the help of a $50,000 MCM cash grant, Owner Kecia Escoe has been able to turn her passion and hobby into a brick-and-mortar business – a major step toward her personal goal of helping to revive the lost art of quilting, which she says provides both emotional and health benefits.

After 20 rounds, Motor City Match has distributed $10.1 million in grants for start-ups and new businesses located throughout the city of Detroit. Through the pipeline of resources provided by the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation’s small business teams, more than 1,600 businesses have received assistance along their journey to open their doors. This is all part of the organization’s greater goal to enhance the city’s economic development and beautify its commercial corridors.
