This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2022 Honda Civic sedan and the 2021 Hyundai Elantra, winner of the North American Car of the Year. The Civic has been the best selling passenger car in Canada for 23 years straight. In the top 3 in the US for 48 years. The Honda Civic has two engines, the base engine is a 2L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT, 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. There is also a 1.5L Turbo 4-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. It’s FWD only. The Hyundai Elantra base engine is a 2L 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine matched with a CVT, 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. There is a 6 speed manual transmission available on the base model in Canada. The Elantra N-Line comes with a 1.6L Turbo 4-cylinder with a 7-speed automatic transmission, 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. There is also a Hybrid powertrain and the new Elantra N for those driving enthusiasts looking for more power with 276 horsepower. All Elantra’s are FWD. The Elantra in Intense Blue has a sleeker and sharper looking exterior than the previous model with a diamond-patterned grille. It comes standard with body coloured door handles and bumpers, 15-inch wheels and a spare tire. One up from the base model, the Preferred trim comes standard with 16” wheels, key-less entry with push button start, a hands-free trunk with automatic opening and plenty of active safety features. 17 and 18” wheels are standard on higher trims. A sunroof is available on this trim if you add the sun and tech package for $1,500 CAD. The new Honda Civic Sedan in Sonic Grey Pearl features a larger front grille and a bold LED headlight design. Gone are the sharp, angular exterior features, it now offers a simplified, clean and elegant design. The slimmer taillights and softer lines give the rear a sophisticated look. The Civic body structure is the most rigid in Civic history. The stiffer structure gives the Civic an improved ride, handling and an improvement in noise, vibration and harshness. The Civic comes standard with 16” wheels, 18” are available on the top trims. To get a power moonroof, you have to move up to the EX trim, one up from the base model. The Civic comes with many standard active safety features just like the Elantra. The Honda Civic has a simple and uncluttered interior design focusing on high quality materials especially on touch points. Materials were also chosen for practicality including the centre console designed to hide smudges and fingerprints. The striking honeycomb mesh accent stretches across the dash from door to door hiding the air vents and creating a uncluttered design. The Civic comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch driver information display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto and heated front seats. One up from the base model, the EX trim is our best value trim for an extra $2300 CAD compared to the base model, you get features like a heated steering wheel and dual zone automatic climate control. The Top Touring trim has a lot of extra features including, a 12 speaker Bose Sound system, leather trimmed seating surfaces, a 9” colour touchscreen, 10.2” digital driver display, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, driver and passenger power seats and heated rear seats. Hyundai did a really great job on this interior, it is a major step forward in design compared to the previous model with over 2 inches more legroom. It comes standard with similar features as the Civic except you get standard wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, an 8” touchscreen which is an inch bigger than the Civic but a smaller instrument cluster at 4.2 inches compared to 7 inches on the Honda. We picked the Preferred trim, one up from the base model with an automatic transmission, as our best value trim for an extra $2100 CAD, it comes with a heated steering wheel, premium cloth seats and a hands-free smart trunk.
The Top trim is where you will find the extra features like a wireless charger, a sunroof, leather seating surfaces, heated rear seats and a Bose sound system with 8 speakers, the Civic gets 12 speakers instead of 8.
You have to add the Tech Package in Canada for $2700 if you want the bigger 10.25” touchscreen and 10.25 “ digital driver display as well as a power drivers seat. There is no power passenger seat available on any trims.
