In late December 2024, President Traore made a speech where he invited all African countries to join the newly formed AES bloc. According to Traore, the alliance was not created for only Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, but for all African countries that desire freedom, and Independence from the West. Right now, Togo has indicated that there is a possibility of joining the Alliance of the Sahel. This is remarkable. The interesting thing is that Togo is a member of the regional bloc, ECOWAS. So if Togo joins the AES what does that mean for ECOWAS? Let's find out.

Togo under the leadership of Faure Gnassingbe has been acting as a mediator between ECOWAS and the three nations of the Sahel which have withdrawn from ECOWAS. However, in a surprising twist, Togo has hinted at the possibility of joining the Alliance of the Sahel, AES, the new bloc formed by the three countries. This was made known by the Togolese foreign minister Robert Dussey in a recent interview. According to him, the suggestion of Togo being integrated into the young regional group is not far-fetched.

"It is the decision of the president of the republic, but it is not impossible," he said to Voxafrica.

Speaking further on the subject, Dussey stressed that his country wants to keep talking with all parties while pursuing its interests. “Today, African peoples everywhere want to be themselves. We are not against anyone. The problem is that some of our partners want us to be at their service, so we say ‘NO,'” he explained.
