🧵 When I use a synthesizer for an extended period of time, I often find myself stuck in a loop, sound design-wise. By that, I mean that after a while, I start creating the same kinds of patches using the same techniques.
🟢 Usually, at this point, I either need to take a break from the synthesizer and move on to something else, or—and this is what I prefer doing—I learn and re-create sounds from other styles besides psytrance using this same synthesizer. If you’re using an older synthesizer like the Virus to re-create a modern sound, such as a dubstep growl, things can get really interesting. You’ll likely end up learning new things about the synth and developing new sound design techniques.
⏩ For this first growl patch, I wanted to keep it simple. I used a couple of sine wave oscillators: I set the first one to a lower octave and the second to a higher one, with about four octaves of difference between them. I then set the oscillator balance to oscillator one only.
⏩ In the filter section, I used the digital saturation algorithm with the oscillator volume (aka saturation intensity) turned all the way up. I used the second filter, which I kept on lowpass with high resonance, to filter down the saturated signal and give it a psychedelic feel with its high resonance.
⏩ Modulation wise, I used the filter envelope, which I set to a slow attack and full sustain with some release to close the second filter. I also set the third envelope, with similar settings as the filter envelope, to slightly change the oscillator balance from one to two.
✅ To finish the sound and give it a stronger psychedelic feel, I used Bitwig’s pitch shifter to pitch down the incoming audio by one octave. I set the grain parameter to a small grain size and modulated the pitch parameter using traditional automation.
