To us, we know a city as a collection of famous sights, buildings, shops, museums and places of work. But to the communications engineer, the city is a huge network of information. Smart cities analyse this information in real time, informing faster and better decisions on everything from rerouting traffic to managing energy consumption. Join quantum photonics expert Ruth Oulton as she explores how introducing quantum technologies will revolutionise how our cities are managed.

Using the properties of single particles, quantum technologies can detect increasingly sensitive changes in the environment and transmit data securely. With the use of quantum navigation devices, our movements around the city underground will be even smoother even when satellites are not available. Quantum smart cities will be more secure for individuals and society, and reveal even more information in real time as we move about our cities.
