Europe's capital is the European town that has changed ownership the most times throughout history.

This is Strasbourg. Located on the left bank of the River Rhine, at the crossroads of France and Germany, Strasbourg was a coveted prize for centuries.

Founded by the Romans as Argentoratum, Strasbourg became a Free Imperial City within the Holy Roman Empire. Then, in 1681, it was annexed by Louis XIV of France.

After the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, Strasbourg was ceded to the German Empire. Following World War I, it returned to France, only to be occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II. Finally, in 1945, it was liberated and became French once more.

In total, Strasbourg changed ownership 7 times throughout history.

This back-and-forth has given Strasbourg a unique blend of French and German cultures, and it is a symbol of European unity, which makes it the so-called Capital of Europe.
