3. Groundwater pressure - Increased groundwater levels can create hydrostatic pressure within cliff structures.

5. Vegetation effects - Plants can either stabilize cliffs with their root systems or destabilize them by widening cracks as roots grow.

6. Human activities - Construction, vibrations from nearby traffic or blasting, removal of vegetation, irrigation, and alteration of drainage patterns can accelerate cliff instability.

7. Extreme weather events - Heavy rainfall, storms, and flooding can trigger sudden collapses by saturating cliff material.

8. Seismic activity - Earthquakes can shake loose unstable sections of cliffs.

In most cases, cliff collapses happen as the result of long-term processes rather than single events, with multiple factors working together to gradually destabilize the formation until a triggering event causes failure.

How does erosion contribute to cliff collapse?

Erosion plays a fundamental role in cliff collapse through several interrelated processes:

Wave action: For coastal cliffs, waves constantly strike the base of the cliff, undercutting it and removing supporting material. This creates what geologists call a "notch" at the base, leaving the upper portion unsupported and prone to collapse.

Abrasion: Waves carrying sand, pebbles, and other debris act like sandpaper, gradually wearing away the cliff face. This mechanical erosion is particularly effective when waves contain coarse materials.

The erosion process creates a feedback loop: as material is removed from the cliff face, more of the cliff becomes exposed to further erosion, increasing instability. Eventually, when gravity overcomes the remaining structural integrity of the weakened cliff, collapse occurs.
