New research by scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Queen Mary University of London indicates that natural selection is acting to combat ash dieback, a fungal disease that has devastated ash trees across Europe. By comparing the DNA of ash trees established before and after the fungal invasion, researchers found that DNA evolution was a driver of resistance in younger ash trees, offering hope for the survival of ash trees in the future.
