Bangladesh’s first-ever metro rail opened to the public on the Uttara-Agargaon route in the capital on Thursday amid huge enthusiasm and a slow pace in ticket sales.
The huge crowd for the rides on the first day caused the crash of most of the automatic fare collection machines for selling tickets, disrupting the journey while the authorities also struggled to handle technical issues.
On the first day, most passengers bought tickets from the counter system Ticket Office Machines, which sold tickets by manually putting entries into the computer and giving change for notes in most cases.
The MRT Passes were not available when the metro rail ran between 8:00am and 12:00pm.
Though the trains waited two to three minutes longer than their scheduled times at the stations, there were only a handful of passengers.
MAN Siddique, managing director of the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, the implementing agency of the MRT Line-6 project or metro rail, admitted that they faced some problems as it was the first day for the service.
MRT Passes were sold at the stations from 12:00pm to 9:00pm on Thursday.
