For almost a hundred years, pirates haunted the seas from Newfoundland to the Straits of Magellan - the Caribbee isles to the shores of Asia. Sailing under red and black flags, they were free men living under creeds of honor and brotherhood, and waged war upon the sea in quest for gold, glory, leisure and salvation. These bloody adventures have become so iconic to the Age of Sail, that the mere sight of a wooden vessel is bound to strike up the image of those black-hearted scoundrels, swinging their swords and singing yo-ho. “Pirate ship” has become ubiquitous with any sailship built before the industrial revolution, sometimes after. It is a bit misleading, since pirates didn’t just use any ships, and were somewhat limited in what they preferred.
