In Beijing, where the Victory Day celebrations will be held, not only Chairman Kim but also Russian President Putin and about 20 other world leaders are gathering.
Accordingly, Beijing is under strict security and control.
Our correspondent Kim Hyo-shin reports on the situation in Beijing.
[Report]
The day after tomorrow, China will host the 80th anniversary Victory Day parade, a major event it has been preparing for with great effort. Leaders from 26 countries will stand atop Tiananmen Gate to watch the parade.
China is expected to place President Xi Jinping in the center, flanked by President Putin and Chairman Kim Jong-un, projecting an image of unity centered around Beijing.
China’s strategy is to use the successful parade to solidify its role as the hub of an anti-U.S., anti-Western alliance. As such, Beijing has implemented high-level restrictions.
In the Tiananmen Square area, vehicles and bicycles may only pass through without stopping, and halts are not allowed even briefly.
Behind me is Tiananmen Square, where the parade will take place. Normally, this place would be crowded with tourists, but now it is filled with an eerie silence.
Across Beijing, armed police and soldiers are stationed, with sniffer dogs deployed as well.
Schools near Changan Avenue, the main parade route, will be closed starting tomorrow, and nearby buildings have been ordered to evacuate.
At Beijing Railway Station, where Chairman Kim is expected to arrive, Chinese security forces have been heavily deployed, and additional checkpoints have been installed outside the station.
Train services between Dandong and Beijing in both directions have been suspended.
[Beijing Railway Station Ticket Agent: “(Are there tickets to Dandong this evening?) Trains after 5 p.m. have been suspended. Reservations are closed.”]
The North Korean Embassy in Beijing, which had been under maintenance until last week, has also completed exterior repairs and put up new emblems.
