I wrote this guitar instrumental after finding out that Hank Marvin used a tape echo unit to get his iconic surf rock tone. Before this, I thought it was all spring reverbs and Fender Jaguars. Now I had to try this! I plugged My G&L Tribute Doheny into My WEM Copicat tape echo and aimed to write something in 2021 that could nicely slot into the classic, 60s genre. As with most things I make, there were elements of psychedelic rock, blues & electro in there too.
The drum machine is a 70s reissue, MFB-301 Pro and was the first part I recorded. I then recorded a rhythm guitar, bass & lead guitar. I recorded most parts through the tape echo and then used the tape echo once again in the FX bus.
I recorded this piece on an 8-track cassette recorder, the Tascam 688. I love this Portastudio and what it does to guitar tones, drums and the ease of mixing in general.
See exactly how it was mixed in my previous video //
I had a lot of fun making some modern surf rock, I hope you enjoy listening!
