Here it is...
Begin playing each and every lick that you learn in as many places on the neck as you possibly can. It doesn't matter how simple or difficult the lick is. Practicing your licks in multiple positions on the fretboard will help you view the fretboard as full of options not obstacles.
We all tend to use our favorite licks in the same old positions, penatonic box 1 anybody? Then, we wonder why when we improvise into unfamiliar territory, we clam up and shut down. The only logical thing to do from that point is to return to home base!
But where's the creativity in that? The confidence?
Practicing your licks all over the fretboard helps you to break out of your comfort zone and ultimately expand your comfort zone to the entire fretboard.

This video walks through a simple lick with only four different notes (E - G - A - D) and shows you how to move the lick around the fretboard.
STEP 1 - Analyze the lick for a sequence of note names. Here we have (E - G - E - A - G - E - D - E).
STEP 2 - Find that sequence in other spots on the fretboard!
Watch this video to see how we take this lick into multiple positions on the guitar neck.
Work this into your practice routine and over time, you'll be impressed with how your knowledge of the fretboard improves. It did for me and this was one hack that helped get me there.
