France's far-right National Rally (RN) made "mistakes" that led to its upset in Sunday’s parliamentary run-off, but the party's time to rise to power has merely been "delayed," party leader Jordan Bardella said in Paris on Monday.

France is facing a hung parliament after left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) coalition unexpectedly led in the election results on Sunday, ahead of previous favourite RN and President Emmanuel Macron’s majority.

"Of course, we always make mistakes, I’ve made some, we all made some, and I take my share of responsibility for these results," Bardella said, speaking to journalists outside the party's headquarters. Bardella blamed a joint call by the NFP and Macron for candidates to drop out of three-way run-off races in an effort to impede the RN's path to absolute majority in the National Assembly.

Still, Bardella said victory for the RN will come in France's next elections, with the 2027 presidential race in its vision. "The wave carrying us is a strong one... and this wave will lead us to power,” he said.
