Gojira has won the Best Metal Performance Award at the 2025 Grammys for Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!), and for once, it actually feels like the Grammys got it right.
The track, originally made for the Paris 2024 Olympics, beat out Metallica, Spiritbox, Knocked Loose (feat. Poppy), and Judas Priest. A huge moment for metal - but of course, the Grammys couldn’t resist an awkward moment, playing Gojira onto the stage with Enter Sandman. Sound familiar? Megadeth fans remember...
Then there was the Spiritbox/Poppy mix-up. On the red carpet, an interviewer confidently introduced Courtney LaPlante as… Poppy. Now, mistakes happen, but this one went three whole minutes without correction. Massive respect to Courtney for rolling with it like a pro - now we just need to see how the real Poppy handled her interview!
Elsewhere, The Rolling Stones won Best Rock Album (Hackney Diamonds), The Beatles took Best Rock Performance (Now and Then), and St. Vincent grabbed Best Rock Song (Broken Man). The relationship between rock and metal and the Grammys has always been complex. While the industry continues to view it as a significant milestone, many fans have grown increasingly disengaged over the years. That said, with legendary artists like Queen, Guns N’ Roses, and Jimi Hendrix never having won, it’s clear that missing out on an award doesn’t define a band’s legacy or success.
