On this day in 2001, former President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and later, Serbia, Slobodan Milošević was arrested and transferred to the Hague after a 36-hour stand-off with Serbian Police. He would become the first head of state to be charged with war crimes by an international tribunal (the ICTY, a forerunner of the International Criminal Court) for his role in the Yugoslav Wars, Bosnian Genocide, and ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. Milosevic died in detention at The Hague in 2006.

In June 1992, Channel 4 News' Gaby Rado would obtain this exclusive interview with Milosevic, who denied his role in stoking Serb nationalim, further inviting the international community into the former Yugoslavia to prove this. Two months later, in a historic joint investigation, ITN in conjunction with The Guardian would obtain the first footage of concentration camps in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
