Today we're taking you on a little day trip to a tiny alpine village in the sierras of Cordoba. How tiny, you ask? It has a population of 30! The town of Villa Alpina, whose name literally translates to Alpine Village, is a small community that can be reached via a winding dirt road 18 kilometres off the main road. The drive is an adventure in and of itself and we made plenty of stops along the way to enjoy the views and try to lure the cows from their pastures with our off-key singing...it didn't really work.

This town is best known as the starting point for hiking Cerro Champaquí, which stands 2,790 metres above sea level and is the highest peak in the province of Cordoba. We didn't come here to hike on this visit (that's another adventure for a future trip), however, we did have a nice day exploring this sleepy mountain town, cooling down in the river, and trying to befriend all the local sheep and goats.

This is a pretty relaxed vlog, but we wanted to share the views with you and give you a taste of the laidback vibe here in the sierras.

Villa Alpina & the Sierras de Córdoba: Hidden Villages, Hiking, and German Cuisine in Argentina 🏔️🚗

Journey to Villa Alpina: Remote Roads & Mountain Views 🚙🌄

The adventure begins on the rugged dirt roads of Córdoba, Argentina, as we make our way to Villa Alpina—a tiny, secluded alpine village nestled deep in the Sierras. With 18 kilometers of winding gravel track to conquer, the trip is slower than expected, but every turn offers new vistas. Along the way, we stop frequently to admire the views, snap photos of cows and horses grazing in open meadows, and simply take in the tranquility of the landscape. The journey itself is a prelude to the serenity and remoteness that define Villa Alpina.

Arriving in Villa Alpina: Nature, Tranquility & Local Life 🏞️🐴

After nearly 40 minutes, we roll into Villa Alpina, a village whose name perfectly captures its alpine essence. The population? Just 30 people! This tiny “metropolis” offers what many travelers seek: peace, elbow room, and immersion in nature. The town’s charm lies not in big attractions but in its quiet rhythm—think horses and mules on the lanes, goats wandering through fields, and friendly locals happy to chat. This is a place for hikers, wanderers, and anyone craving a break from the tourist trail.

River Retreats & Nearby Towns: Refreshing Escapes 🌊☀️

The day before, we explored Los Reartes, a neighboring town famous for its cooling river—a godsend on hot spring days. Rolling up our pants, we waded into the gentle flow, finding the water pleasantly refreshing and imagining how wonderful it must feel in the height of summer. Villa Alpina, too, is blessed with its own river running through town. After our arrival, we stroll downhill to reach its banks and a little footbridge—an easy walk on the way down, but one that promises a steep, sun-drenched climb back up!

Exploring Villa Alpina: The Heart of Simplicity 🌳👣

Villa Alpina may be small, but it’s rich in simple pleasures. We take time to explore the quiet streets and paths, marveling at the sweeping mountain views and the slow, peaceful pace. With its low population, friendly locals, and a landscape dotted with animals, it’s an ideal retreat for lovers of the outdoors. If you’re after activities, the most famous is the hike to Cerro Champaquí, Córdoba’s highest peak—a challenging 6-8 hour trek that draws small groups of hikers to the village.

Lunch in a German-Argentine Landmark: Belgrano Rojo 🍺🥘

After hours of exploring—and with hunger mounting—we leave Villa Alpina for a nearby culinary institution: Belgrano Rojo, a German-themed restaurant that’s been serving up hearty meals for 60-70 years. Here, we feast on German classics. I go for the knackwurst, a thick sausage with a signature snap, served alongside sauerkraut with bacon and ham. The others opt for homemade goulash, complete with hand-rolled noodles and parmesan. Cold German beer pairs perfectly with the meal, and memories surface of eating goulash and pilsner back in the Czech Republic. After hours without lunch, this hearty fare is just what we need.

Evening in the Cottage: Simple Argentine Dinner & Wine 🍷🥪

As dusk falls, we return to our cottage, tired but satisfied. Dental appointments fill part of the day, but the highlight is our Argentine-style late dinner—a 10 p.m. feast of fresh bread, salami, avocado, and local wine (Santa Julia Tempranillo). Sandwiches are spread, wine is poured, and the day winds down with gratitude for simple pleasures: good food, good company, and mountain air.
