The Kirov — Kotlas railway line has a length of 382 kilometers. The railway line runs through the territory of the Kirov region (the main part), the Arkhangelsk region, as well as the Vologda region (a short segment with a single station Susolovka). The railway line was opened in 1899. The main purpose of the railway at the time of construction was to connect the Vyatka province and the Western Urals with Kotlas, a marina on the navigable Severnaya Dvina River. At the time of construction, the railway was called the Vyatka-Dvinskaya Railway. Until 1942, the railway was a dead end. In 1942, the main part of the Pechora Railway (Velsk — Kotlas — Mikun and beyond) was put into operation. Kotlas has turned from a dead end into a hub. The Kirov — Kotlas line has acquired a new meaning: a transit route in the direction of Vorkuta.
