Ajea’s hand quivered in the frigid winter air as he ran his index finger over the plaque he and Eira had engraved for their favourite park bench. The metal corners had worn to a rounded edge and grime had made it’s way intertwining through the once golden letters. This was their bench. In silent memorial, Ajea tilted his eyes upward toward his EKO Bot and down once again toward the plaque. It had been ten years this day that Eira passed on, and ten times Ajea had visited their bench. “Let the company of your loved ones echo on through the days of your life”. Ajea could almost hear the voiceover from the EKO Industries commercials ringing in his head. They had offered a groundbreaking technological opportunity for those with loved ones near the end; to have them digitized within the body of an EKO Bot as a memorial companion. What they didn’t advertise was this primitive future technology’s limitations in communicating with your so-called digital loved one. Was Eira really inside his forever silent EKO Bot? Was she really there, following his every step through the years? Ajea may never know, and with a mournful acceptance he gazed down to read the plaque once more before returning home.“Forever together - Ajea and Eira”
