Here is a chase of the UP LOW10 Torrance Local from Downtown LA to Harbor Gateway in Northern Torrance, with both of UP's only two GP40P-2s on the roster, a very rare treat.

We begin the chase at the local's origin of 4th Street Yard on the East Bank of the LA River, utilizing a power set of geeps completely covered in graffiti. While observing the switching operations, a couple UP thru-trains pass by on the Metrolink River Subdivision mainline. Once the trainset is complete, we watch it round the bend off the 9th Street Connector to East Redondo, where it briefly travels over a portion of the Alameda Corridor Sub before entering the Wilmington Sub.

Our next shot is at the Torrance/El Segundo Lead switch in the I-105 Freeway tunnel, then following it to its first industry of the day. The train serves Phillips 66, a refinery located in West Rancho Dominguez, where it pulls and spots tank cars before heading lite power down the Downtown Gardena street running section to the Normandie siding in the Harbor Gateway neighborhood. The previous day's LOW10 wasn't able to switch Crenshaw Lumber in time, so today's train picks up the cut of 4 loaded centerbeams and pulls north toward Gardena with the UP 1373 leading, then shoves into the Crenshaw Lumber spur.

After shuffling the centerbeams around the industry on the former Pacific Electric right-of-way, complete with bonded jointed rail, the local retraces its steps, once again passing through the Gardena street running. A mail truck stops too close to the train's path, and as a result, gets its rear mirror clipped by the passing locomotive. The train then stopped and once a brief inspection was conducted, it was back underway.

The train stops at the runaround track by Phillips to pick up the cut of cars it pulled from the refinery, then continues northbound toward the Wilmington Sub, which once was Pacific Electric's 4-track mainline to Long Beach. We finish the chase at CP WI057 South Carson on the main line paralleling the Metro Blue Line, where it meets the RWCWCG Rock Train which runs from Cabazon to Gardena, waiting in the siding. The Robertson's Ready Mix facility is located right next to Phillips 66, making it the second train to traverse the Torrance Industrial Lead today.

The EMD GP40P-2 was originally built for the Southern Pacific in 1974, three of these were bought for the San Francisco Peninsula commuter service between San Francisco and San Jose. The engine differs from the base GP40-2, sporting a flared radiator and an extended carbody that housed a steam generator to power the passenger cars. After Caltrain assumed the commuter operation along the corridor, the three engines were placed into freight service with the steam generators removed. Union Pacific owns 1373 and 1375, while the Indiana Harbor Belt owns the 4010. Thanks for watching!
