Italian progressive rock band Claudio Simonetti Goblin came to Moscow for the first time! The cult band is known as the authors of music for possibly the best horror films of the 20th century — Suspiria by Dario Argento and Dawn of the Dead by Giorgio Romero, the de facto father of the entire zombie industry in pop culture. Goblin have collaborated with cinema for many years, and for 40 years now their status as gurus and masters of the genre has been indisputable.
Thom Yorke from Radiohead says this about his favorite music Goblin: “The soundtrack to Suspiria is legendary. I have watched the original several times and I love it very much for its incredibly powerful music. It is very much tied to its time.”
The influence of the music of Goblin, Argento and Romero on modern cinema is difficult to overestimate — without their tandem, there would not have been a huge number of films, horrors and thrillers inspired by them. Not to mention TV series and computer games - part of the popularity and lore of the same franchise "The Walking Dead" is based in some sense on the legacy of these people. Only recently, last year, a remake of "Suspiria" was released in Hollywood with Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson in the lead roles, and it was the same Thom Yorke, knowing his relationship with the original, who was offered to become the author of the music for the new film. However, even without this fact, already in the 70s, after the release of the first film with their music, "Blood Red" by the same Dario Argento, the popularity of Goblin outside Italy was only growing. At some point, their songs topped the charts for as many as 15 weeks in a row! By the way, Claudio Simonetti, the founder of the group, himself grew up in a musical family. His father is the famous pianist and conductor Enrico Simonetti, and in Europe, the compositions of the father and son often appeared together at the top of the sales charts. Goblin's recent album, Rebirth, was released this century and immediately became a collector's item: the price of the record on various websites reached $500. By 2019, Goblin had already entered the history of music and imprinted their name on the same level as such outstanding composers as Ennio Morricone and Vangelis. The band had not given concerts for 30 years, so the very fact of their return to the stage is already an incredible event. On May 13, 2019, the band performed for the first time in the capital at the 16 Tons club.
