Why Does Spain Still Have Cities In Africa? #shorts
Well, let's talk about Ceuta and Melilla. These are Spanish enclaves situated on the Moroccan
side of the Strait of Gibraltar.
Even though they're in Africa, the people living in Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish. They use the
Euro currency, speak Spanish, access Spanish services, and proudly fly the Spanish flag.
These cities are known as Plazas de Soberanía, which means places of sovereignty. Their
location gives them both historical and strategic significance.
Ceuta has a long history dating back to the time of the Phoenicians. It was later captured by
Portugal from the Marinid Sultanate.
Today, there's a dispute over the status of Ceuta and Melilla between Spain and Morocco. Spain
controls them, but Morocco considers them illegally held territories.
