What if Germany conquered the Philippines?
In 1898, during the Spanish-American War, Germany sent five warships to the Philippines—not to fight, but to scare off the US and maybe buy the islands from Spain. With Spain getting weaker, Germany saw a chance to expand its empire, even if it meant risking conflict.
But the US held its ground. Admiral Dewey blocked Manila Bay with their ships, sending out warning shots, forcing Germany to back off without a fight. In the end, the US bought the Philippines from Spain for $20 million.
But what if Germany succeeded? The US would’ve lost its biggest base in Asia. The Philippines could’ve become a German naval base, threatening nearby British and French colonies. But by WWI, Germany would’ve still lost the Philippines with the rest of its colonies.
And so to my 15-year-old viewers—no, we probably wouldn’t have ended up with a moustache man.
And for Filipinos? Maybe we’d call longganisa bratwurst or celebrate Oktoberfest with our fiestas—but we’ll still face another brutal colonization.
But—was denkst du?
