A tsunami is a series of large ocean waves usually caused by a sudden disturbance that displaces a massive amount of water. The most common cause is an undersea earthquake, especially at subduction zones where tectonic plates shift suddenly and move the seafloor. Other causes include volcanic eruptions, landslides into the ocean (either from land or underwater), and, more rarely, meteorite impacts. These events push water outward, creating waves that can travel across entire oceans and cause widespread damage when they reach the shore.
