How did different Asian Countries get their names? So India got it's name by the Indus River, You see the Indus River was called Sindhu River in Sanskrit, but when the Persians came, they called Sindhu River as Hindu River, Hence the name "Hindustan". Then some say India got it's name from the Greek word Indos which they used for people living by the Indus river. Then Indonesia got it's name by 2 Greek words, Indos and Nosia, which means Indian and Islands respectively, Hence the Name Indian Islands, but then the British came and then changed it's name to Indonesia.
