All of us get fortunate in life in seeing children growing up. As a child starts to crawl, speak, walk, it brings joy to the parents and relatives. However, children with different range of abilities often follow a different development path than their able-bodied counterpart. This proposal tries to help in development and rehabilitation of children and young adults with severe speech and motor impairment (SSMI). Persons with severe speech and motor impairment (SSMI) belong to an isolated part of the disability spectrum. The complexity of their physical conditions restricts them from having natural interactions with their environments even for activities of daily living (ADL). Advances in robotics and technology have provided opportunities to design systems to enable and support persons with disabilities in everyday activities, communication, education, and fun. This research work proposes an inclusive and safe eye-gaze-controlled human-robot interaction (HRI) system for persons with SSMI. The proposed work is evaluated through various user trials performed at Vidyasagar school for special children (formerly the Spastic Society of India), Chennai. Our proposed system allows a user to pick and drop an object by controlling a robotic arm based on his/ her eye gaze. The user can see the robotic arm and the object to be moved during interaction. We also developed and patented a Multimodal Joystick Controller that enables users with SSMI to operate any remote controlled devices like toy cars, drones or robots through their eye gaze, . A user-centric design approach has been taken while iterating over possible solutions based on face-to-face interaction with the end users, special educators, trainers, and parents of persons with SSMI. The proposed system is already used to improve eye gaze interaction and rehabilitation through making block prints.
