Ever notice how both Knuckles and Shadow don’t even flinch when Sonic tries to intimidate them? In the scene with Knuckles, Sonic is clearly trying to act tough and scare him into handing over the emerald. But Knuckles doesn’t fall for it at all. Even though he gives Sonic the emerald in the end, it’s not out of fear—he just doesn’t want to fight and possibly hurt Sonic, considering he already beat him twice. Then there’s Shadow. Sonic, in his full-powered, super-angry form, tries the same intimidation act. And just like Knuckles, Shadow isn’t fazed at all. He not only fights Sonic but even knocks him out of his emerald form. Both times, Sonic’s attempt at being scary totally flopped. Knuckles was more concerned about Sonic losing himself to anger, while Shadow saw him as just another version of himself. Sonic wasn’t scary because of how he looked—he was scary because he was willing to risk everything.
