On October 17th, Officer Chirino was responding to a call of a person breaking into vehicles and came into contact with the suspect. Almost immediately, a violent altercation began and Officer Chirino was shot. Additional officers arrived to the scene, placed the suspect in custody, and immediately began to render aid to our injured brother. His squad mates realized the severity of his injuries and placed Officer Chirino into a marked patrol unit and rushed him to the hospital. Officer Chirino didn’t give up, and continued to fight for his life. The medical staff at Memorial Regional did everything they could to save his life, but his injuries were too severe. In the early hours of October 18th, 2021, Officer Yandy Chirino passed away. Officer Chirino is a true hero and died fighting for a community he loved. We remember his life and legacy with our Department, our city, and our community.
