I was installing windows in the back doors of my van and this was my chance to check how the insulation underneath the carpet lining was doing - mould, damp and rust, or dry and clean?

Knowing I was going to be cutting into my van - a truly horrible, but necessary, thought - I was pretty excited to be able to see how the foil bubblewrap insulation I had stuck to the metal of the van door under the carpet lining had held up.

It has been about 2 years since I insulated the van and, having carpet over the top of all of it, I was very curious to know whether it’s doing ok under there.

I recently decided to remove one of the wall panels, cut through the carpet and see whether the recycled plastic bottle insulation was doing well or covered in damp and mould.

Fortunately, it was doing great after 2 years in there, so I sealed it back up again.

Now it was the time for the door insulation. Before I had any insulation installed, I had stayed in the van overnight a few times and noticed that the thin bare metal of the doors gather SOOO much insulation, so insulating it before carpeting was a priority.

I decided to use foil bubblewrap insulation and to glue it to the metal as I would be carpeting over the top and didn’t want it to sag underneath.

Would the foil insulation be ok, or would it have degraded with time, with moisture, mould or - even worse, rust - forming on the van metal.

Cutting into the carpet of the van, I started nervously peeling the carpet back. The insulation came away with it and I was able to see that….fortunately, it all looked as good as the day I put it in.

I’m incredibly relieved to see that it’s all doing well. Whilst I live in a temperate climate and don’t live in the van, the thin insulation is just enough to stop condensation and reduce road noise on the panels - a decision I don’t regret, especially now I can seeing it working!
