The composer, Luis de Narváez (c. 1500 – after 1552), was a Spanish Renaissance musician and one of the most important composers for the vihuela. He was one of the first to write instrumental variations in European music history.
The theme of this piece, "Guardame las vacas", comes from a Spanish folk melody that was widely known in the 16th century. The title roughly translates to "Look after the cows for me" – a simple rural phrase, fitting for its origins in popular, pastoral life.
The melody itself is based on just four repeating chords, which gave composers like Narváez a chance to invent creative and elegant variations. Despite its simplicity, the piece shows rich musical imagination and Renaissance elegance.
