Preeclampsia
Preeclampsia is a condition that pregnant women develop.
It is marked by high blood pressure.
The condition usually appears in late pregnancy generally after 20 weeks, though sometimes it can also develop at an early stage of pregnancy or just after the delivery.
In India the incidence of pre-eclampsia is reported to be 8 to 10 percent among pregnant women. Each year an estimated 50,000 women lose their lives from preeclampsia worldwide.
If it remains undiagnosed, preeclampsia can lead to eclampsia, a serious condition that can put the baby at risk. Though these facts sound scary, the good news is that pre-eclampsia can be treated. Early detection is the key.
During pregnancy consult your doctor if you notice symptoms such as sudden swelling, blood pressure greater than 140 by 90, weight gain over one or two days because of a large increase in bodily fluid, abdominal pain, vision changes.
Sometimes women do not show preeclampsia symptoms hence it is important to see your doctor regularly for blood pressure checkup and urine tests.
Let us understand what causes preeclampsia.
Experts believe it begins in the placenta, the organ that nourishes the fetus throughout pregnancy. Early in pregnancy new blood vessels develop and evolve to efficiently send blood to the placenta. In women with pre-eclampsia these blood vessels don't seem to develop or function properly.T
his could be due to insufficient blood flow to the uterus, damage to the blood vessels, a problem with the immune system certain genes.
Timely diagnosis helps your doctor to intervene and start the right treatment with close monitoring of high risk patients for optimal patient care one can be sure about a healthy mother and the baby.
