Creating an effective alarm rationalization process involves several key steps and considerations. This includes documenting the outcomes within the master alarm database, developing alarm response procedures, and integrating the database information into the management of change process. Additionally, updates to the control system alarm configuration will be addressed, alongside discussions on best practices and other relevant factors.
Two pertinent standards for alarm rationalization are ANSI 18.2, revised in 2016, and the latest version of IEC 62682, released in 2022. Both standards incorporate the guidelines outlined in EEMUA 191 and define a master alarm database as an authorized compilation of rationalized alarms and their associated attributes, which will be a focal point in our upcoming discussions on rationalization.
