Intervals are foundational to our musical study. There are two sides to learning intervals. The first is the mechanics: learning what the intervals are and how to use them. We use them in many areas of music, including building chords, learning scales, and traveling easily from note to note. The other side is the terminology: learning their names. This is a little more complicated than it sounds, but I’ll be here to walk you through it!

The first 3 lessons in the series will cover major, minor, perfect, augmented, and diminished intervals. Lesson 4 introduces compound intervals; Lesson 5 deals with spelling intervals, which tells us weather to call a given note a C# or a Db; and in Lesson 6 we will cover inversions.

Our musical tradition has been handed down to us over the last 400 or 500 years. It’s like evolution: you can’t go back and change it just because it doesn’t make sense. The terms and the rules I’ll be teaching will be confusing, but there’s a reason for this. It’s because they are unfamiliar - and not all of the rules always make sense! I’m going to ask you to trust me, to come along with me on this journey, and to be patient with yourself. You CAN learn this. It will just require some thoughtful repetition. And as always, I’m here if you need me.

The patterns shown in this series will be as they appear on the bass or guitar fretboards. String instruments are pattern-based, and so teaching patterns is very uniform and easy. Instruments like horns, woodwinds, and keyboards don’t allow the player to think in uniform patterns. However, this course WILL instruct players of those instruments on how to name and think about intervals. I believe in having an inclusive learning environment. So no matter what your instrument or your musical background, I welcome you to join me in this 6-lesson series called Intervals in Music.

If you have questions for me you can find me at . I’ll see you in the next lesson!

🧑 ABOUT ME
My name is Alex, and my passion is teaching music online. I’m a bass player and composer by training and trade, but what I really love to do is teach. I make my living teaching private lessons on Bass, Guitar, Piano, and Ukulele. My favorite thing to teach is theory - helping the students understand the “why” behind the music and empowering them to make better and more informed musical choices. I’m very adamant about teaching technique. This is how you gain power and control over your instrument and ultimately raise the ceiling on where your limits are and where they will be in the future.

I appreciate you participating in learning music with me, either for free through my videos or in private lessons in my virtual studio. Players of all abilities and backgrounds are welcome! There’s no music lesson I don’t love.
