Liquid-gas flow can cause vibrations and significant unbalanced loads in piping systems. When large storage tanks are fully drained, there is a point in time when a liquid-gas mixture enters the piping system. This possibly leads to flow regimes, such as slug flow, causing vibrations or high unbalanced loads.
A CFD analysis was performed on the draining of a large storage tank at atmospheric pressure to analyse if these flow regimes can be expected. The results are shown in the video. At the moment the liquid height in the tank reaches the top of the connected discharge line some instabilities arise in the flow and minor slugging is expected. However, shortly after, the flow becomes stratisfied and no slugging was observed.
