Here's a pro tip for anyone planning to go camping or take a van life road trip on the Denali Highway in Alaska! While there are many pull-offs along the highway, most of them leave you parked right next to the road. If you're looking for a bit more solitude and a true backcountry experience, you need to know where to look.
In this video, I'm showing you the Swede Lake Trail turnoff, located around mile 15/16 when you're coming from the Paxson end of the Denali Highway. This gravel road leads to a large, open parking area that's perfect for overnight camping. It's a fantastic spot to get away from the main highway traffic and find a more secluded place to park your camper van or RV for the night.
This area serves as a trailhead for hiking and, in the winter, for ATVs, making it an excellent base camp for further exploration. The problem with many spots on the Denali Highway is the lack of privacy, but a short drive up a side road like this can make all the difference. This is how you find the best free camping and boondocking spots in the Alaskan wilderness.
This is just one of many tips from my complete journey down the Denali Highway. Make sure to SUBSCRIBE to Living My Alaska for the full series and more essential Alaska travel and overlanding advice!
