According to local media in Hainan, residents reported finding the carcass of a large animal on the evening of May 17 at Baishi Village beach in Wenchang. The carcass emitted a strong odor and measured about two meters in length. Residents speculate that the animal was washed ashore by the waves a few days prior. On May 20, staff from the Fisheries Affairs Service Center of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau of Wenchang City told reporters that the carcass was severely decomposed and no longer had research value, so it was disposed of safely. Local fishermen suggested that the dead animal might be a "spotted catshark," but this claim has not been officially confirmed.
