Will Bennu hit Earth? Will an asteroid hit earth in our lifetime?
Join American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and a television personality Kelly Clarkson on discussion about an asteroid (or near earth object or NEOs) Bennu, a near Earth asteroid that passes close to Earth about every six years. Neil deGrasse Tyson adds that ‘this is an asteroid whose orbit crosses that of Earth’s orbit. And any asteroid that crosses Earth’s orbit will one day collide with earth’ and adds that ‘it’s just a matter of when, it will cross Earth’s orbit and we think it could hit us with 1 out of 3000 probability in 2182!’. In reply to that Kelly Clarkson adds ‘that’s not far!’. Then Neil deGrasse Tyson replies ‘that’s not far, and the Asteroid Bennu is about the size of the Empire State Building which is not going to extinct the Earth but wherever it hits, it would be really bad!’.
Moreover he then adds that ‘but 160 years that’s plenty of time to find out Bruce Wills (an actor who played a role in a Sci-fi/Action movie Armageddon 1998). And then with surprise Kelly Clarkson continues ‘there is no way to protect us?’. Neil replies ‘no, There are no plans right now to deflect an Asteroid be it NASA or any other space science agencies’ Moreover he adds a funny thing ‘if you know that the dinosaurs had, they had a Space Program they would still be here!’ isn’t that a fascinating thing? ’
