The Advanced Photon Source (APS) is one of the most productive X-ray light sources in the world. Scientists use the ultrabright X-ray beams it generates to help them create stronger materials for roads and bridges, develop better batteries and solar cells, and design vaccines and treatments against infectious diseases.

This virtual tour allows you to step inside the APS and learn how it works. You'll see how it generates X-ray beams a billion times brighter than those used in dentist's offices, and tour experiment stations where scientists study the makeup of materials and the structures of viruses. The APS is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science user facility at Argonne National Laboratory.
