👉 Samoa and American Samoa are NOT the same place! 😜 Although they are close on the map and share much of the same culture and traditions, they are different places. Samoa is an independent country since 1962.
👉 The only country to lose a day! In 2011, Samoa changed its time zone to be more in line with its closest trading partners, New Zealand and Australia. But since it is located right next to the international date line, changing its time meant it had to skip December 30, 2011 all together!! (But it went from being one of the last countries to celebrate the new year to one of the first!)
👉 It's the real-life Moana! Much of Polynesian culture stems from Samoa and Tonga. Driving around the country, beautiful waterfalls, mountains, and beaches, it really does feel like wandering through the real-life version of Moana.
👉 Traditional Samoan houses are called "fales", and are made of thatched roofs and no walls. They are still found all around the country.
👉 And yes, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is half-Samoan. His mom is from Samoa and in 2004 he was given the title of a high chief in Samoa. 😁
