So it’s time for another edition of our series Revelations, where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs, giving us inside information and little-known stories about their biggest hits. From a song’s origins to legacy, you’ll get rare insights that only the artists themselves can give. For today’s episode, we’ve got another good one. From their 1969 self-titled debut album, it’s the loneliest number that you’ll ever do… the one and only ‘One’ by Three Dog Night. And we’ve got lead singers Chuck Negron and Danny Hutton to tell the tale. So let’s get into it.
A hugely successful American harmony rock band, Three Dog Night was formed in 1968 in Los Angeles by Danny Hutton… Danny was a singer-songwriter and vocalist who had already achieved minor success with the song ‘Roses and Rainbows’ in 1965. For Three Dog Night Hutton recruited musicians from diverse backgrounds, including co-lead vocalists Cory Wells and Chuck Negron. A backup band was also assembled out of various musicians in the Los Angeles area: Mike Allsup on guitar, Joe Schermie on bass, Jim Greenspoon on organ, and Floyd Sneed on drums.
Three Dog Night would stick together as a stable unit for about five years… and in the process became one of the biggest bands in the world for the last part of the 60s and into the early 70s. The guys earned early success on the West Coast club circuit.
