We considered getting a truck to haul everything away, trying to get a wood chipper into this part of the lot, but ultimately, a burn was the best option given the terrain.
This is another glimpse into rural life in Argentina as we attempt to renovate a property in the Sierras of Cordoba.

🔥 Controlled Burn with Fire Department
We kick things off with a spirited “Burn baby burn!” as the local fire crews arrive to help us tackle a controlled burn, clearing months of piled-up brush on our property.
🪵 Landscaping Mishap Uncovered
A hired crew vanished mid-job, leaving towering mounds of branches from the hotel terraces down to the river. We take full responsibility for inadequate contractor vetting.
🚒 Fire Department Partnership
We partnered with the volunteer fire department since hauling piles away wasn’t practical.
Cost breakdown: 8 000 ARS per firefighter (6 on Day 1, 7 on Day 2) + 15 000 ARS for the fire truck → ≈ 63 000 ARS (USD 163) per burn.
Burn schedule: 4 PM–8 PM (or 7 PM–1 AM off-season), plus a two-hour cooldown to ensure total extinguishing.
🍖 Mini Asado Celebration
After hours of burning, we join the firefighters for a tiny asado—grilling chorizos, assorted meats, bread and Coke—celebrating Argentine-style with those who fought the flames.
🌙 Nighttime Burn Highlights
Glowing embers fill the screen as firefighters spray water on hotspots. We capture them monitoring until the land is completely safe under a foggy sky.
🪓 Sorting Firewood vs. Brush
We showcase two neatly organised piles: thick logs reserved for our wood-burning stove, and thinner branches slated for future burns—credit to the initial crew’s tidy sorting.
📅 Multiple Burn Sites & Weather Delays
Rain forced postponements, and each fresh site—from the hotel forecourt to the fruit orchard—requires a new permit. Yet with every burn, the land looks more open, spacious, and reveals stunning mountain vistas.
