A one-way mirror, also known as a two-way mirror, works based on the principles of light reflection and transmission, specifically the way light interacts with a partially reflective surface. It is a sheet of glass coated with a thin, semi-reflective layer of metal. This coating allows some light to pass through while reflecting the rest. The key to making the mirror appear one-way lies in the lighting conditions: the room on the reflective side (the observer’s side) must be brightly lit, while the room on the transparent side (the hidden observer's side) must remain dim or dark. Under these conditions, most of the light hitting the mirror from the bright side is reflected back, making it act like a regular mirror. Meanwhile, the relatively low amount of light coming from the dark side passes through the glass, allowing someone in the darker room to see into the brighter one without being seen. This effect relies on the physics of light intensity and the balance between reflection and transmission at the interface of two media.
