"Ships" is a song originally written and performed by British musician Ian Hunter in 1979. It is said to be about Ian Hunter's relationship with his father. "We're two ships that pass in the night" is a repeated line in the song.

Barry Manilow covered the song "Ships" in 1979 and explained why he chose it. Manilow's father had been absent from his life since he was two years old. In 1975, after a concert, while changing in his dressing room, a man entered and said, "I'm your father. I enjoyed the concert and would like to see you again," before leaving. This was their first meeting in 30 years.
