Saudi Arabia's Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman Al Saud arrived in Tehran on 17 April 2025. This was the first visit of a senior Saudi official to Iran in 28 years. He met with Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The visit was aimed at improving defense ties and enhancing bilateral cooperation. The visit is part of the improvement in relations between the two countries following a historic agreement brokered by China in 2023.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has not said that Iran has a nuclear bomb. Rather, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has warned in recent statements that Iran is very close to the ability to build a nuclear weapon. In April 2025, Grossi said that Iran has almost all the necessary materials and technical pieces to build a nuclear bomb, and it can make a bomb by combining it at any time. According to IAEA reports, Iran has accumulated a large stockpile of uranium enriched up to 60%, which is only one step away from weapons-grade (90%). By March 2025, Iran is said to have enough uranium to make several nuclear bombs. However, Iran has repeatedly claimed that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. However, it has not been confirmed that Iran has actually built a nuclear bomb. Some reports linked the earthquake in Iran's Semnan province to a nuclear test, but experts have considered it to be an earthquake. The IAEA says Iran's cooperation is declining, increasing monitoring challenges.
The US withdrew from the 2015 JCPOA deal in 2018 under Trump, following which sanctions were re-imposed on Iran. Several attempts to bring the deal back on track have failed, but now both sides are back at the negotiating table.
