"The Needle" is a Soviet feature film in the thriller genre with elements of drama and arthouse, filmed in 1988 by director Rashid Nugmanov at the Kazakhfilm studio. Nugmanov's first full-length directorial work. The scriptwriters were Aleksandr Baranov and Bakhyt Kilibayev. The main roles were played by rock musicians Viktor Tsoi (the Kino group) and Pyotr Mamonov (the Zvuki Mu group), for whom the role in "The Needle" was his film debut; Marina Smirnova and Aleksandr Bashirov also starred in the film. Most of the actors who took part in the film actually played themselves, since their own names, as well as the names of their characters, coincided.

The premiere of "The Needle" took place on September 16, 1988 in Alma-Ata (Kazakh SSR) and in February 1989 in Moscow. The film became the leader of the Soviet film distribution in 1989, and Viktor Tsoi was recognized as the best actor of the same year by the magazine "Soviet Screen".

Russian film critic Alexander Pavlov considers the film to be a cult film, including it in the list of 120 cult films of world cinema.

This film was the first in the USSR to touch upon the theme of the tragic fate of the Aral Sea.
