When The Beatles returned from their first Hamburg residency, Stuart Sutcliffe stayed behind with his girlfriend, professional photographer, Astrid Kirchherr.
By the time the Beatles returned to Hamburg for their second residency, Paul had switched from guitar to bass.
Stuart still stood in with the Beatles on occasions but his time as their bass player was all but over.
When the Beatles returned to Liverpool, Stuart once again stayed in Hamburg. This time he continued his art career and enrolled in the Hamburg College of Art.
Sadly on 10 April 1962 Stuart died of a brain haemorrhage. The Beatles learned of Stuart's death when they arrived in Hamburg for their third residency.
