Hannibal is renowned for his ambush tactics against the Romans, most famously at the Battle of Lake Trasimene in 217 BCE. Here’s how he executed this historic ambush:

Location and Preparation: Hannibal selected the northern shore of Lake Trasimene, where the road ran between the lake and steep hills, creating a natural choke point. He concealed his infantry and cavalry in the hills and woods along the Roman army’s expected route.

Deception and Timing: Hannibal’s visible camp lured the Romans, led by Consul Flaminius, into a false sense of security. At dawn, a thick fog from the lake further reduced visibility, masking the Carthaginian positions.

The Ambush: As the Roman columns marched along the lakeshore, Hannibal’s hidden troops attacked from the heights and the flanks. The Romans, caught by surprise and unable to form proper battle lines, were quickly overwhelmed. Many were forced into the lake, where they drowned or were cut down.

Aftermath: The ambush resulted in the near-total destruction of the Roman force, with over 15,000 Romans killed and thousands more captured. Flaminius himself died in the fighting.

This ambush at Lake Trasimene is considered one of the largest and most successful in military history, demonstrating Hannibal’s mastery of terrain, surprise, and psychological warfare.

Hannibal also used encirclement tactics at the Battle of Cannae (216 BCE), but Lake Trasimene is the classic example of a true ambush
